Holmium is element number 67. It is a rare earth element and shares its name with one of the founders of rare earth wines, a partnership forged by three friends (and their families) with a deep interest in wine. These friends are research collaborators trying to repair environmental degradation, through extracting valuable rare-earth metals from a major environmental problem.
Equally, rare-earth pays homage to terroir, or the region and earth within which wine grapes grow.
This shiraz pays homage to the environment and the land upon which the grapes were grown. Only one barrel was made, this wine is indeed very rare…

Tasting Notes
2025 Holmium Shiraz
We carefully selected and purchased these grapes from one of the top producers of Shiraz in the Swartland, a region known for producing some of South Africa’s most outstanding Shiraz.
Notes of spiciness, cherry, and vanilla with complex yet subtle tannins. Light acidity. Holmium pairs well with strongly flavoured meat or vegetable dishes or can be enjoyed on its own.
Fermentation Notes
The grapes were fermented in a 1000 litre fermenting tank. A gentle pigiage was done three times daily until the wine was completely fermented, and twice daily following this until pressing. This allowed for lengthy extraction of the grape tannins and flavonoids. The wine was transferred to a new French oak barrel for maturation for 12 months. Malolactic fermentation was done in-barrel, and the wine was left on lees until bottling. The wine was racked immediately prior to bottling but was not filtered, to ensure maximum complexity. Additional maturation in bottle for at least another 18 months will allow the wine to integrate more fully. Because the wine was not filtered, sedimentation may occur. Decanting is recommended prior to enjoying.
